Boxer brief length guide
3, 5, 7 or 9 inch boxer briefs. Which length is yours?
See where each length lands, then answer three quick questions. No algorithm theatre.
The short answer
Inseam is the leg length of a boxer brief, measured from the crotch seam to the hem. A 3″ sits very high on the thigh. A 5″ is short and sporty. A 7″ ends around mid-thigh and is the standard everyday length. A 9″ runs down towards the knee. If your underwear rides up, your thighs rub, or you wear a thobe or dishdasha, start with 7″.
See the difference
Four lengths. Four perfectly reasonable opinions.
7″ A guide, not an anatomical promise.
7 inch boxer briefs
The everyday length
Ends around mid-thigh. Enough leg to stay put, not so much that you notice it. The sensible start if your thighs rub or shorter pairs ride up.

Your length
Side by side
3 vs 5 vs 7 vs 9 inch boxer briefs
The best length is the one that suits your clothes, your thighs and your tolerance for fabric. There’s no universally correct inseam. Tragically, even underwear has nuance.
| Length | Where it ends | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3″Short and high | Very high on the thigh | Short shorts, running, minimal fabric. | Less fabric between the thighs, so it can ride up on some men. |
| 5″Short and sporty | Upper thigh | Gym, sport and shorter shorts. | Less fabric between the thighs than a 7″ or 9″. |
| 7″The everyday length | Mid-thigh | Trousers, jeans, walking, thobes and most days. | Can show under very short shorts. |
| 9″The long leg | Lower thigh, near the knee | Thobes and dishdashas, longer legs, maximum coverage. | Too long for short shorts. More fabric than some men want. |
What does boxer brief inseam mean?
Inseam is the leg length, measured on the garment from the crotch seam to the hem. It describes the boxer brief, not exactly where it lands on you. Height, thigh shape, rise and stretch all move the hem up or down a little.
5 vs 7 inch boxer briefs
A 5″ uses less fabric and disappears under shorter shorts and gym kit. A 7″ covers more thigh, which makes it the better start if your thighs rub or shorter pairs creep up. Neither is automatically more comfortable. It depends what you wear.
What length to wear under a thobe or dishdasha?
Under trousers, the trouser leg holds everything in place. Under a thobe or dishdasha, nothing does. That’s why a 7″ or 9″ works best for most men who wear one: the longer leg stays where you put it. If you prefer less fabric, a well-fitted 7″ is the shortest we’d suggest.
Length isn’t the whole fit
A longer leg doesn’t guarantee a boxer brief stays put. The leg opening, rise, stretch and the right waist size matter just as much. A well-fitted 5″ will behave better than a badly fitted 9″.

Quick questions
What is the standard boxer brief length?
7 inches is the standard everyday length and ends around mid-thigh. 5 inches is the shorter, sportier option. 9 inches is the long-leg option.
Is a 7 or 9 inch boxer brief better under a thobe?
Both work. A 7″ suits most men. A 9″ suits men who want the most coverage or have longer legs. Shorter lengths tend to ride up because nothing on the outside holds them in place.
Do longer boxer briefs stop riding up?
They help, but fit matters more. A longer leg has more thigh to hold on to. The right waist size and a leg opening that sits flat do the rest.
What lengths does Unluckies make?
Two, for now. The 7″ Original in M, L and XL, and the 9″ in XXL only. Both are 93% MicroModal and 7% elastane. A 5″ is in the works.
