The Best Underwear to Wear Under a Kandoura or Thobe in the UAE
If you wear a kandoura or thobe regularly, the layer underneath matters more than it does under jeans. The outer garment is loose and light, it moves constantly, and it does nothing to hold your base layer in place. Most men solve this badly, usually with standard boxer briefs that were never designed for it.
Here is what actually works, and why.
Why a Kandoura Changes the Requirement
Under trousers, your underwear is held in place by the trousers themselves. Denim and chinos apply constant light pressure that stops fabric shifting around.
A kandoura does none of that. There is no outer layer pressing anything into position, so your underwear has to stay put on its own. Combine that with the open airflow of the garment, a lot of walking, and Gulf heat, and two problems show up immediately.
The Two Problems With Short Inseams
Standard boxer briefs sold in UAE malls typically have a 3–5 inch inseam. In mild climates and under fitted trousers, that is fine. Under a kandoura in Dubai, it is not.
First, inner-thigh friction. When the fabric ends mid-thigh or higher, your thighs contact each other directly. In heat and humidity that creates chafing which gets worse across the day, and it is far more noticeable when you are walking in a loose garment than when you are sitting at a desk.
Second, riding up. Short-inseam boxer briefs have less fabric anchoring them in place. With no outer layer holding things down, they shift and bunch. That means constant adjusting, which under a kandoura is both uncomfortable and awkward.
Why a Longer Inseam Solves Both
A 7–9 inch inseam keeps the underwear anchored where it should be. The fabric sits against more of your leg, which prevents riding. The extended coverage also removes inner-thigh contact entirely, which removes the friction at the source.
This is not a matter of preference. It is a function of how fabric behaves in movement. More coverage means more stability, and stability is exactly what the outer garment is not providing.
How the Lengths Work
